It's very important in the deep darkness of the Delves. Is it any wonder the Darkeen have devoted most of their magical studies to spells dealing with the manipulation of it as-well-as the flame? They were taught by elves in the magical arts in the third era of humanity. Magic then was new to man, and only the most basic spells of fire and light, healing and protection were used.
That was many thousands of years ago.
Today, Darkeen are a fierce breed of martial arts and magical adeptness. Mages are noble because they can rend most warriors to flayed strips of bacon. Warriors serve because they really have no choice if a lasting society is to continue. Ages of contest between the two sects have produced the equilibrium of the now.
The Empress used to be feared more than respected, but in this age she is seen as a mother of the nation and the high point of the cultures achievements. When scholars of the race compare the histories of the outside worlds, they learn swiftly that although the society they built is far from perfect or ideal from a common view, it has lasted unchanged far longer than most Elfish courts.
Within the black crystal hall of Quarva Lunam, magic is amplified to the point of it's greatest use. The natural energy of the materials used to construct the palace make powerful wizards almost godlike within the hall. The reproduction of the false sun's in the great passages is an example of the mastery of magic that has unfolded over time. Now they harvest more than garish meats and fungi for food. Harvests of surface foods can be grown, and by the use of her skills, mock seasons count the passage of time and allow the growth of new environments.
The empress (the tenth of her line) is mortal born, but over 565 years old. If she leaves the palace she would whither and die, but inside it's walls, she is likely to live indefinitely. Thus, her power comes at a price few would pay, and the very existence of the Darkeen rests with her preservation.
